Transition to MBB or FAANG PM - which is the better move before MBA?

Dec 21, 2021 72 Comments

3.5 YOE in tech and management consulting at Deloitte. Looking to make the next move, get paid more, and set myself up as best as possible to get into a good MBA program and for good job ops post-MBA.

Considering either going to McK, BCG, or PM at Google. I have relevant experience for any of them.

Role would be 1-2 years and then I’d like to go get my MBA. Any insight as to the best move and why would be appreciated!

TC: $110,700
YOE: 3

If you can get PM at Google already, there’s no point in wasting 2 years + $400k+ in tuition + lost pay. That’s one of post-MBA and MBB’s top exit options

Based on your end goal, the MBA adds no additional value as you can already reach the goals without it. I recommend getting a degree simply because those before you failed to do it themselves. Don’t let their past mistakes be your future burdens.

  • Referrals only will get you a call. PM interviews at FAANG are very different from MBB. I know folks with Stanford MBA, MBB exp and still have not gotten through FAANG PM. I guess a better starting point would be the role and then the company.

Google PM here straight from Deloitte Bloomberg. Deloitte is brand. Check LinkedIn for people like me
      Suck it

    • May be Bloomberg went a little too far. @SquidGains - it’s very very uncommon for someone from Deloitte with 3.5 YOE to directly get into G PM. I guess that was the point. And honestly, any non-PM exp is categorized all together. Deloitte is a recognizable brand but not something like “oh this guy is coming from Stripe” or anything of that sort. No one needs to tarnish any company’s image here but we just all have to be realistic. The way op put the post is like, I’m the ruler of the world - hey g, when are you going to hire me? Which probably warranted that response from Bloomberg.

I used to work for PayPal and Amazon before and I don’t even consider those as brands strong enough to get me a G PM job.

What makes you think you can get PM at Google?

  • Get to a good B School and explore MBB for a bit. Those evaluating MBA purely with tuition cost or opportunity cost mechanics does not have any clue what doors a good MBA will open to you.
How will you evaluate those experiences which you get by studying /collaborating with some of the smartest people out there, the network which you'll build and lot of other intangible experiences.
A B-school should not be treated as a placement agency. Studying at a good B School (read Tier-1) will not only help you evolve professionally but also personally.

And just a word of caution: Don't overestimate yourself , there are bunch of smart folks having similar experience as yours and still struggle to get into MBB/ FAANG. Play with your strengths, stay humble and learn as much as you can. Nothing else matters !

Appreciate the perspective. I feel like B school would be beneficial in all the ways you described. I agree with you and don’t necessarily subscribe to the school of thought that if I just land a good gig, I can skip B school entirely.

And of course - don’t want to put the cart too far ahead of the horse here. I know my targets of MBB and/or FAANG pm are ambitious. Definitely not a shoe in but I think I have a strong background and some solid connections/referrals which could help the cause. I’ll stay humble! Thanks mate.

  • LMAO @ Deloitte. I'm ex-MBB and if you think it's a cake walk to get into any of those companies then you're laughably stupid

Lol that’s fair - I know it’s not easy. Didn’t mean to frame it as if I think I’m some hotshot who can waltz right in. Just wanted to lay out absolute best case possibilities and get feedback!
