Hi

I cleared the final rounds and expecting an offer soon.

The recruiter has asked for my current salary and RSUs which I have not provided yet.

How do I negotiate?

Do they ask for paystubs and RSU account statements. How do they verify those documents ?

As of January this year it is illegal to discriminate based on a previous salary. So they can ask, yes, but hopefully they are aware of the law to not make a decision based on it.

The recruiter can't submit your packet to the hiring committee without a previous salary. But make no mistake...they're not asking for your current salary...interpret the question as to what your expectations are. RSU's? That might help if agreeing a signing bonus since you'll have to walk away from unvested shares.

And no they won't ask for pay stubs. Negotiate hard! If you got to this stage, you have the upper hand because they don't get competing packets from multiple candidates...too much work.

Don't lie about salary. That can be verified with a background check. Equity cannot. You can try to fib about that, but honestly coming from another tech company they already know what to expect about how much equity you already have based on level and tenure. So if you inflate it, they'll likely spot it.

So I can just call any random person's employer and they'll tell me how much money the person makes? Really? You think this is how the world works?

Sigh. Don't take my word, go find a company that offers employment background check services and ask about their offerings, as a potential client maybe. You'll find out exactly what is available.

  • Tell them your expectations, it's ok to expect more than what you are making now. If you say nothing, they will probably low ball you.
