Hi all,

I received an offer from Apple for post silicon validation - software engineer. From what was explained, I'm expected to write benchmarks in C to test the metrics if the SoC. I'm interested in computer architecture and was thrilled when I got the offer.

But now I'm seeing skeptical views on validation profiles. I wanted to know what the blind community thinks about hardware validation profiles and the future prospects of the same.

Thanks!!

It’s a pretty nice gig, you get to walk the line between hardware and software and you can explore as deeply as you want into each end.

The more knowledge of the hardware you have, the better you’ll be at your job. These are complex systems and it’s almost like you’re a detective trying to solve inexplicable mysteries. Most of the time you were just an idiot and programmed something wrong, but a small minority of the cases it’s a mystery and then there’s some spOoOOoky 👻 interaction going on which is somebody else’s hw/sw or architecture bug that you discovered. On the software side it’s good to know how the SWEs plan on using said hardware because you can cover the use cases better but I mostly meant it in a general sort of way where you can go look at the guts of the iOS SW stack if that interests you.

Make sure the work isn't just running some benchmark tests and you are given solid sw development opportunity too.

What’s the cons for running benchmarks and debug? Can still get exposed to a lot of features across the whole silicon?

Gets redundant after a while. And you always have to be in fire fighting mode jumping between different issues.

I started with similar shit 3 years ago. You're a new grad. If your hardware specific love stops you then i understand. Otherwise join -> leet -> Target fb/G and then go deep into the swe world!
