I feel very sad for the high performers in startups joining Google. I've seen many of the Nooglers in the past year coming from startups and getting into borderline depression because of low impact.

At Google, things move SLOWLY and it is hard to connect with team outside work. Pls get that into your minds while you prepare for Google interviews.

If you are coming for the brand, decent pay, and a nice work life balance, you will be happy.

If you want to connect with your work, get emotionally attached to your work, want a fair performance review process and be friends with your teammates outside work, pls don't join.

It will lead to unnecessary depression as you will not be ready to leave your "dream job" and at the same time, won't be motivated enough to do anything related to "impactful" work.

Sincerely,
Proud coaster.

Thats nonsense. Mostly gcp is being forced into low COL areas. In US that’s Austin. Elsewhere its Poland and India. Teams are being moved off with your EM being in Seattle/MTV.
Gcp by nature has lot of ops issues with customer tickets piling in. Its just Amazon without the PiP there.

  • OP, is this true for GCP related teams? Or across all the products like search, maps, ads?

All, I feel people here are very cold. All the talks are about work. You never really make any friend here.

OP, how exactly do you know that they are depressed? Did you speak to them about it? And what startups are you referring to?

Nobody talks about being depressed in big tech, but it is written on their faces. People join these companies hoping they would do cool stuff, but all they end up doing is copying some config changes.
      Downleveling breaks so many people.

Got it. So you notice that they are depressed through the way they do their work which is not at their best potential?
