I am an L4 SWE at Google with 8months experience and graduated with a PhD. I have an offer from Microsoft Research as a Scientist. I am being offered L62 with nearly my Google TC so no pay bump.
The Scientist position is amazing and I know all the people there. They do great work and publish and I really wanna be a part of it. OTOH, I've heard refreshers, infra, tooling in Microsoft sucks and nobody beats Google in that. Over the long run I would definitely be making less.
I am very confused as to what should I pick. I am unhappy with Google work but love the TC whereas I love the Microsoft work but TC will be bad over the years. Any advice for me? Should I follow my heart and make the leap? I would not be able to make the Scientist jump later on - it requires a strong publication record which I have now but I won't be able to publish in Google in my team.
Goog tc - 240k, M tc - 235k
