1. i tried for 2 years to switch to a PM role at netflix and failed. 2. i started losing motivation and my performance started to dip. my manager noticed and gave me a warning that i had to improve if i wished to remain on the team 3. COVID made it clear to me that tmrw was not guaranteed. i had to take action now. i wrote an article discussing "why I quit a $450k engineering job at netflix" here 👇 https://tinyurl.com/why-i-quit-netflix #engineering #software #pm #netflix

Bravo for recognizing what you want.
TL;DR?
COVID made me imagine a tombstone that said, "here lies <your name>. he spent his life doing a bunch of work he didn't like. then he caught COVID and died. RIP" that spurred me to quit
Was a SWE, didn't like rest-and-vest and an easy job, wants to be entrepreneurial but can't get a role like that in NFLX, so motivation declined and decided to quit. Just thinking how many people with families would love to have that kind of job.
Tl;Dr: you quit your job because they were going to fire you
OP, recommend you reading No Rules (if you haven’t already) to better understand why role transitions aren’t supported at Netflix.
Eng to PM actually happens in Netflix. It doesn't happen a lot because as an IC, eng has more upside on TC
That doesn't make a lot of sense if a good performer can simply quit and reapply for a different position?
Nice
Not because 450k tc is too low?
netflix explicitly does not apply golden handcuffs. you decide how much of your salary goes into options, and options vest every month as soon as they are purchased good on you for chasing your dreams tho. good luck!
I think golden handcuffs is just when you stay because you know you’ll have to take a pay cut to switch. I know a lot of people in HFT/HF tech that complain about “golden handcuffs” despite having no equity.
that’s a looser definition of golden handcuffs than i usually see, but sure, makes sense
I am stunned that you would admit all this using your real name. Do you never want to be hired again?
?? What did he admit to? That he burnt out and his performance dipped so he negoiated a severance?
He admitted to slacking off, when he didn’t get his way. He admitted to being passive about his development, expecting managers to be responsible for it. He blames N for this, showing a lack of self-awareness, great entitlement, and ignorance of N’s very clearly stated corporate values. These are major red flags. Worst of all, displaying them for no reason demonstrates incredibly poor judgment. This guy has committed career suicide for a few likes and lols.
Congratulations
Congrats man. You did what was right for you. I quit to take a break a few years ago. Best decision of my life.
