Why is our country owned by Israel? I don't want my tax dollars fund genocide. How can we stop this nonsense?
https://www.statista.com/statistics/217489/revenue-per-employee-of-selected-tech-companies/ Not that this is the formula, but just another angle to look into it, Netflix makes $2.3M per employee annually. So by paying someone $400k-500k, they are able to reap $2.3M worth of value from them on average.
In early days when dot-com bubble popped, Netflix had to let go 1/3 of its workforce. And to the management's surprise, in no time the remaining staff were able to handle the work better and become happier. That led to the concept of hiring only A players as a key company culture. And you can only hire A players if you pay the top of the market. Headquartered in SV, Netflix isn't competing against HBO or Disney for talents, it's always Google and Facebook.
That’s not OP’s question though. Even with their top talent Disney and HBO are giving them a fight, so whats the reason to keep paying for that talent, if they can’t beat the lower paid guys.
Disney and HBO are copying Netflix in so many ways. It would be interesting to see who innovates the most in the coming years. Reimplementing something already done is not what Netflix hires for
Come back and claim that Hulu, Disney Plus, and HBO Max is on par when they have interactive shows
Nobody pays you more than they make from your contribution. Some companies are just better at converting your time into dollars.
How much of it is also because they end up only hiring top senior talent (so they’re saving on junior engineer salaries altogether)
IMHO Netflix does not pay too much. Look at FB offers. I think the crown 👑 goes to them. We pay all cash vs other pay in stocks is the only differentiation. It is brilliant actually if you look at it. Since we pay cash it can be a little less and still be considered a top offer.
It’s what makes the company and the founder Reed great. They’re not driven by frugality and he’s also not a slave driver like Bezos. With the revenue Amzn, msft etc make, they can easily afford to pay their employees this much but they choose not to and placate wall street instead. In short, the question should be why aren’t the other companies paying as much, haha.
This is how they make their reputation. Like they are hiring top people. In reality their tech mostly sucks (stupid old java backends) and most of engineering people are quite ordinary. Tons of Indians hire only Indians.
I’m sure the people working on your Erlang and Lisp backends are Lamport, Djikstra and Don knuth himself.
If you let me rewrite the entire stack from scratch, I'd still pick Java for the primary back end. No othet language has so many mature open source frameworks and experienced engineers in the market.
Sour grapes..
They fire you fast and don’t give benefits while you’re there
We do have benefits as good as most top tier companies. Check out our career site.
Are you both recruiters ? The tones are quite the same.
