as an analyst, we are expected to know the ins and outs of our deals and deep details. with such a heavy workload, it can be hard to take a breath, step back and recognize the bigger picture. i am often just focussed on completing task after task. once you get a few analysts under you and begin to get to work on bigger picture problems, do you guys feel like youve gotten more enjoyment and fulfillment out of the job?
Much more enjoyment out of the deals although there are additional pressures that you are not really exposed to at the very junior level. Taking negative feedback from a client, for example, is much worse than getting it from an Associate or even an MD. That being said, you are correct in that as you move up, you build on your skills and experience in order to put more pieces of the deal puzzle together and as a result have a much more enriching experience.
I relate to this comment a lot, though I would say it is important to have both a “big picture” mindset and associates that allow you to operate in that mode. At my firm, we analysts are expected to do all the nitty gritty tasks, from modeling to decking, but the associates also constantly overlook the process and provide contextual commentary when necessary. As long as your associates allow you to get involved with some of the “bigger picture” things and you are ready yourself, it becomes a much more fulfilling process.
It is good to have regular check ups with your manager to keep the big picture in mind. It would help you better understand why you are doing your work and would help you perform better
For me personally, I need to understand the big picture of the project to be successful at my tasks for the project
As you grow and have folks under you the challenges are different but still exist. There are a lot more people related challenges (less getting an Excel model to work or a PowerPoint slide formatted correctly ). I think it really depends on the type of person and what you enjoy doing. If you are pretty introverted and like to read and do data work it can be a pretty difficult transition to have to be in front of clients and manage people problems on your team. The pressure is different (not better or worse).
