No offense to you TC hunters, but I’m getting tired of the corporate mentality at Apple of produce at all cost and the expense of shitty code and processes and no cool side projects. Amazon is the antithesis of a place I’d like to work. I don’t care what the bar to entry is - what companies have the old school hacker spirit - more nice nerds/interesting characters/projects at the expense of the business/etc. less corporate types and anal middle managers. Is this a pipe dream? Is google the closest to this?
Business is driving everything.. why not create ur own side project and work on the stuff you want to work on? You may end up creating a good product which u can sell later.
If clean pristine neat code actually helped make a business better then all corporations would be insisting on that. It just happens to be the case that quick hacky code delivered sooner is better for profits than clean pristine code delivered later. Requirements change literally every day. Any company that does what you want won't survive long.
No, it is just harder to find people that make good code, and it doesn't make sense if you work like a factory, with thousands of people coming and going.
I think if your company is more focused on maintaining an already good product than innovating and adding features, then they're more likely to care about good code. When people are focused on deadlines for delivering entirely new products, they tend to lose sight of good practices, especially when faced with intractable bugs.
Hacker spirit? Who has time for that? Everyone is out there to make money. You have hacker spirit do it after your job, many do.
How is your WLB at Apple?
Pretty bad, dev project run and operated by devs so feature work and constant noisy on-call, we also just hired some workaholic pricks and a bunch of cooler devs left for startup and google
Which org is this?
Without business case, there are no jobs. Don’t you think everyone wants that magical place where there is no pressure, only personal fulfilment? Sadly, Santa doesn’t exist.
The amazon comments just reinforce why I don’t want to work there lmfao
It’s called philanthropy
Sadly yahoo used to be like that. Was very well respected for its hacker culture.
I had a former manager from yahoo at one point, very cool guy/innovative projects
Dave? :)
I think it's possible at Google still but not common

Google is just as bad. They just hide it better. Go find a no name startup.
Pretty sure startup code could be even worse though :P
