We are increasingly moving towards a world where people don’t want to be held accountable for their decisions. Insurance is essentially a social contract with others that if you are faced with a catastrophic event, you personally won’t be financially ruined. You need a certain amount of people to utilize less than they pay in to cover those who require more in order for it to work. With an aging population, poor decisions (smoking, sedentary lifestyle, obesity) leading to higher prevalence of expensive chronic conditions, it becomes unsustainable.
We also go to heroic lengths to prolong life and spend inordinate amounts on end of life care. That cost needs to be covered somewhere.
