I think one of the points of conflict that I have had with a manager is that they very selfishly and aggressively making us work so that they would deliver to business and hence reap the rewards. While, business is also concerned about just achieving their goals at minimal cost and some people in the engineering team, won't mind giving In to manager's demands, even if that requires stretching beyond the office hours, to deliver the goals, I find this exploiting and think that the manager should be a guiding influence rather than a controlling or dictating one. His job may be to help us grow but it's better decided by us, as to what's important for us and our career aspirations rather than them dictating the goals for us. I'm not sure if that's how it also works at the other places, but isn't the manager's goal to help the employees succeed and not using them as resources, for achieving his own career goals?

This is professional world not santa clause to grant your wishes. If everyone “decide what is important “ the company would be a mess. They paid you to deliver what they want to do. You can propose but they company has the final say. You dont like it then leave. This is business simple as that. Imagine an NBA team where each player decides what is important to himself and where he should go and when to shoot or pass. Will this team survive?

I’m a manager and have been for years—I view my job as supportive in almost its entirety. It’s worked a million times better than any other method, including the ole strong arm...that said, its a real delicate balance of aligning my teams individual goals by learning what those actually are and helping them see how they can achieve those while pursuing company objectives. It’s a skill. I don’t know too many people who have it and I fail all the time and it’s my sole focus... I suppose the takeaway is be careful with the expectations you have. We’re all just people

  • Most companies (and managers) support you when it benefits them and their goals to do it.

The company is not interested in your growth as a person beyond this.

But if you ever find a manager that cares about you as a person and is also good at navigating company politics, then stick to that person like glue through your career.
