Are you there to help your manager succeed or is your manager there to help you succeed?
I think one of the points of conflict that I have had with a manager is that they very selfishly and aggressively making us work so that they would deliver to business and hence reap the rewards. While, business is also concerned about just achieving their goals at minimal cost and some people in the engineering team, won't mind giving In to manager's demands, even if that requires stretching beyond the office hours, to deliver the goals, I find this exploiting and think that the manager should be a guiding influence rather than a controlling or dictating one. His job may be to help us grow but it's better decided by us, as to what's important for us and our career aspirations rather than them dictating the goals for us. I'm not sure if that's how it also works at the other places, but isn't the manager's goal to help the employees succeed and not using them as resources, for achieving his own career goals?

The company is not interested in your growth as a person beyond this.
But if you ever find a manager that cares about you as a person and is also good at navigating company politics, then stick to that person like glue through your career.
