Brand Director in Gaming or Google PM?
Despite being able to FATFire, I still work a relatively basic W-2 job because I like working. I'm almost 30 and enjoy the social element as well. I'm leaving my current job and have a few offers.
I currently work in video games, on the business side of a marketing team. I have two offers that would take me in pretty different directions. One is at a 2nd tier, but not bad, video game publisher, overseeing a full marketing team as a Director of Brand Management. The other is from Google as a Product Manager (L5) in a video game related (but still majority Tech) team. I've been slowly turning down offers that didn't have the right work-life balance or team fit.
On paper the Google job seems better. The pay will be substantially more (~30%), but more money, while nice, doesn't have that big of an impact on my lifestyle as it would for most people. It's also a more prestigious job. I've recently gotten into Angel fund management and find that current/former job plays a big part in the social dynamic.
The video game job keeps me in a really fun industry, but the full marketing part of the job isn't as fun to me as the business part of it. Despite being a promotion, it's a step down in caliber of publishers I've worked for, but managing a team is something I've been wanting to do and won't at Google for at least a few years. The video game job is also fully remote, which I don't like as much as in-person; Google would be Hybrid.
Both of my mentors have conflicts of interest (I also have offers from their companies I'm turning now), so random internet strangers it is.
Current TC: $250k
Potential TC: ~$300k-$450k
