How do you cope with comparison envy and IPO regrets?

Blind tax: 190k
NW: 1M with spouse
YOE: 10, PhD incomplete

-

Pandemic years have been amazing for the market. Scores of new IPO millionaires. House appreciation.

Meanwhile, I’ve been working and renting in the Bay for 10 years, with nothing to show for it. Made bad investment choices like putting half of NW in ARK funds and Chinese stocks circa Jan 2021 (if you think BABA is hit bad, check out TAL and EDU).

NW peaked in 2020, and dropped 40% in last 12 months. How to cope and not compare myself to others?

Have hobbies and live your life. Money is a tool that I use to enable experiences. When I can’t find the experiences I want, I switch jobs.

Pain is life teaching you to avoid harmful behavior. Be content yes, but accept that if you make risky investments you’re open to losing money.

  • If you’re stupid enough to invest in Chinese stocks you brought this on yourself

Hey man, I totally feel you. I turned down a pre-IPO offer that in retrospect would have had more than 3x TC. It’s just something you need to put out of your mind since it’ll affect your happiness.

At least you are self aware and you know that you comparing yourself to others and you know that it is harmful. If you fill your time with other activities and not sit idle then you’ll be too busy living your own life to give a fuck what others are doing. Because trust me, everyone else is too busy living their own life to care about how you are doing.

In your late stage of your life you’re not gonna regret not having made more money than your peers, but you might regret wasting all that time obsessing about something that doesn’t matter when you could have been having fun and living life to the fullest.
