My employer filed work permit for Canada for me. I completed the biometric and waiting for the application process to complete for the passport stamping. The current timeline is 8 weeks but I have to return back to India before that. Is it possible to get the visa stamping done at a country other than where you gave your biometrics? Did anybody happen to have done this?

  • Stamping visa from home country while doable is likely to delay total time it will take you to eventually get to Canada. If you're going to be able to work from abroad then no issues, but if you're going to be unemployed, I would recommend staying put and waiting it out for the Visa Application Center in NYC or LA to give you the visa stamp.

The thing is my days are numbered here so that's why the plan to get the stamping done elsewhere. The alternative then is to apply for B2 and hope I get the receipt before my stay ends. Thanks for the suggestion though

    • Ask for details on specific timing from Canadian lawyer. If you're going to be unemployed, could mean the difference between 60 days in the US (even if on B-2/visitor status) vs 4 to 6 months of wait if you go to India or another country abroad.

Wayfair has a big OPT hiring and H1 Cap program, but if you don't get selected they do a pretty good job of retaining you by moving you to canada for a stint.

I've personally gone through this and know of folks who got delayed by taking a trip home to visit family. I'm actually debating staying put in Canada now as the pathway to PR and Citizenship is much faster and less hectic vs coming back to the US and waiting 10+ years! #thisisamerikkka
