Singapore rental housing

Sep 20, 2021 29 Comments

I'm moving to Singapore from USA next month and I've been looking at propertyguru and 99.co for rental apartments.

I see nice high floor 3 bed condos in CBD area like V on Shenton for $7500 - $8500. Apart from the rent, how are the utility bills in Singapore? Are there any other fee like maintenance (equivalent of HOA) etc that I should be aware of?

One data-point for you - we have a 2 bedroom condo (2 of us) and working from home for a while now, we pay an average 200 SGD per month including Electricity+Water+Internet. If you are renting you shouldn't be paying any maintenance fee, we have moved houses 2-3 times and did not pay maintenance. It could just be that your agent/landlord is paying it and probably baking it in the rent.

Would any be able to provide information on how to first get a job in Singapore as a SWE, then more detailed things like global income tax etc. I am interested in getting a job there in the future and it would be very helpful.

If you are in the US, The easiest way is to switch to a company which has presence in SG, and then doing an internal transfer. You get a high TC and still get to be in the same company. Check out grab, Google, fb, stripe. Google/fb would be better as they pay more and their teams are growing there.

      DM me for any questions!

  • Xoogler here, welcome to Singapore! I wouldn't recommend living in CBD/town. There are far nicer places to stay and commute conveniently. Check out River Valley, Bukit Timah, Tanglin, Holland Village. Those are far nicer and have great life after hours. DM if you need anything else, best of luck!

River Valley, Robertson Quay and Somerset are the best areas to live. Literally 10 mins from CBD, Orchard Road, Tiong Bahru MRT station with great choice of cafes and everything you need walking distance. Avoid the condos on the street because it gets noisy. Avoid Holland Village.
Check the OUE Twin Peaks and the Futura condo in Leonie Hill for a fancy unit in probably the best buildings in SG imho (around 7k to 9k SGD, amazing facilities.
If you have remote work I suggest you get a taxi the few times you need to go to the office (to Google office it’s about 10USD one way).
One little thing, from expat to expat: are you sure about moving to Singapore? If you do it to explore south east Asia, forget about it. The country is not allowing anyone in and out especially from Thailand, Philippines and Indonesia.
~11% of foreigners left in less than 18months (4% of the total population left for good, citizens and permanent residents included) because here walking around means mask on the face even if you are alone in the park (yes, it’s not like in the US, you need the mask always on except if you are exercising and there are “ambassadors” telling you to put your mask on) and the limit for dining in is currently 2 people per table max (in case you have unvaccinated kids there’s some rule to be aware of).
Check with your office about all these because it’s a deal breaker for many.
    Otherwise enjoy Singapore 😉

Just today it was announced there will be travel green lanes with several countries to/from Singapore. If you are vaccinated you can come from the US without quarantine but there are some pre-departure details.
For dine in still nothing, but it might change around Chinese New Year if the situation remains stable (Chinese New Year is big here). Good luck :) you’ll like it here

  • Hi, welcome to SG! a tips I have is, 90% of the rent you see online is marked up by 10~30%, so if possible you'd better first try looking from carousell, fb group, or contact the agent directly.

Also, is it true that google SG office currently is only for mobile devs for the google pay team?
