EU relocation at Red Hat

Jan 29 6 Comments

I am currently living in a HCOL EU city and for personal and financial reasons would like to relocate to Brno, CZ.

How is the relocation process for European citizens at Red Hat? Do managers often allow relocations for non-business reasons? It would make sense financially for the company to relocate me there because my TC would be lower, but are there any administrative or procedural obstacles to this?

  • I've seen it happen smoothly a few times, going from more expensive to cheaper it's easy to get approval. Of course a pay cut will come, but you should be able to negotiate a little as long as it's still cheaper. Be careful that in some countries taxes are different (including for companies) so even you getting paid less doesn't necessarily imply you're costing less to the company.

Step 1, talk to your manager. Red Hat is very flexible in terms of mobility within the EU and USA in particular. As long as you are moving to a country that RH is registered to do business, and your role allows for it, normally there won't be any serious issues. And it doesn't necessarily mean a pay cut either. The more likely scenario is that it will affect future comp adjustments. So if you go from HCOL area to a standard area, then expect to see less in terms of raises, etc. Also don't expect RH to pay your moving costs or anything like that. Unless they hired you with a relo clause, then any future relo is on you. Tons of hats in Brno, good luck!

It's easy to transfer to a LCOL country like CZ, especially if you are already in Europe. Ask your manager and there shouldn't be too much problem.

  • As with pretty much everything: "ask your manager". You can also search the source: look for mobility, relocation, etc. There's a whole site dedicated to this.
