Hello, I am a graduating phd student at one of the top 4 CS schools, specializing in ML, with a decent publication record (800+ citations and several first author top conference papers). I went on recruiting for industry Research Scientist positions and got the following initial offers.

All compensation is annual TC over 3/4 years, depending on the stock vesting period.

Snap 360k
Facebook 330k
Google 280k
Apple 270k
Amazon 220k

The levels are L4 or equivalent. I wonder what's the final offer I should aim for? I know https://aipaygrad.es/ exists and indicates 400k+, but my offers seem considerably low compared to the webpage... Is it because they are initial offers? The pandemic is affecting me? AI hype is over?

Also any tips for negotiating with multiple offers would be appreciated! I feel like everyone will approximately match the highest (Snap) offer, ending the negotiation. Any way I can keep the competition going?

I got 400K as new grad AI PhD from top 4. Had 3 total offers and made them compete. For what it's worth, h-index of 15.

Thanks for the info! I am in a similar situation. Can I ask what year it was, and what were the initial offers?

You really want to join FAANG in the midst of antitrust lawsuits? All those citations must have gotten to your head. If you’re really that good you should get tenure and/ or start your own company.

It’s definitely enough for an agent sponsored O1-A (that’s how I started out). OP, DM me for lawyer recs and if you need an agent. Don’t DM me if all you want is money πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

L5 is not rare, you are mistaken - L5 is the norm.. I joined as an L5 fresh out of PhD early this year.. know several friends of mine who also did join as L5 after PhD

Low balled offer for your research experience / potential.. Negotiate more and get to atleast 400k TC if not more.. Also why L4? PhD s can get hired at L5 in some places.. would require demonstrating some good behavioral rounds + ml design aspects..

I heard L5 is extremely rare, although it's worth giving a shot! I will definitely push for 400k+ TC.
