How to move from nonexistent company to real one?

Some explanation is in order.

I’m US-based and educated, but I’ve been working for the past 6 years as a machine learning engineer at a tiny company with 5 full-time employees that currently only does business in Eastern Europe (within EU). We aren’t on LinkedIn, and if you go to our website you won’t find anything about the people involved in the company. Pretty much the only people that know we exist are our customers and our competitors.

I need a job with a normal company. Ie one that hires me as a W-2 employee and provides benefits like health insurance. When I see people talk about vetting and background checks I wonder if this is going to be a big problem. Apart from a website with a phone number, there’s little evidence accessible to most people that the company I work for even exists.

Is this a big problem? Am I worrying about nothing?

I believe that as long as you are able to show your skills you will be fine. If new grads with no experience could get into "real companies" then so can you.

My concern is more about possibly getting flagged as faking my work history. I would definitely not interview someone if I thought they were faking any part of their resume.

  • You still would have pay stubs and tax documents right?

All I could provide would be income tax filings that show self-employment income, but this doesn’t show I wasn’t running a law-mowing business and pretending to be a SWE.

I’m also concerned about whatever initial vetting they might be doing before even scheduling interviews. I have no idea what goes on behind the curtain.

  • Don't worry about that. People without work history get hired too lol
