I switched career from Video Content Production to Software Engineering in my early 30s due to financial reasons. I am a senior engineer today and appreciate the fact that there is constant grind and learning in this field, and honestly, I enjoy it. Do FAANG company recruiters and teams consider candidates with profiles similar to mine for engineering roles?

  • Yes, unusual backgrounds tend to do really well. Iff you can get in the door. My background is weird so it took a few hops to get into a tier 1 company, but since there have excelled because the thought patterns are kind of monoculture.

    • Didn't graduate from college, never took a coding class. Just self taught, started in open source, hired by startups, worked my way up to a public US company, then FANG. They didn't look at my resume until I worked at a tier 2 basically, which wouldn't look at my resume until tier 3, which wouldn't look at my resume until open source.

If you can leetcode anything is fair game, assuming you get an interview, which should be doable with a referral.

I have an engineering degree in Electronics and Communications.
At Dell, I learnt writing excel macros to generate reports and dashboards. That led to learning HTML, CSS and JS to build web based dashboards and small python scripts for process automation.
I caught the attention of a few engineering leaders by winning internal hackathons and that's how I landed SWE role at Dell.
