Question for Facebook friends. What is the scope and role for E6? 🤔

For example Amazon SDE3 is expected to
- Architect and develop large scale software
- Technical influence across the team and org
- Lead 5-10 SDEs and advice the org leaders (SDM, Sr SDM, PM)
- actively get involved in interviewing and mentoring

Principal SDE (L7) has around 10 times wider scope than SDE3 - less hands on but significantly larger technical influence.

I am curious about where the expectation for Facebook E6 sits around.

don’t know how it works at amazon, but the biggest challenge as E6 is finding projects that are impactful in the first place. then building strategies, driving XFN comms, and then providing technical leadership

Probably depends on the team. On my team everyone is E5+, and there are even teams where everyone is E6+. These (at least the ones I know about) are teams in infrastructure. It isn't possible for every E6 on such a team to lead 5-10 SWEs. On such teams, the level seems to be determined by skillset and value of contributions. Things like fundamentally fixing problems that have been around for years with new features/rearchitectures, consolidating systems, enabling new use cases, or efficiency savings can alone justify E6 if the value is high enough.

  I agree. I think it's just an older system to have Senior followed by Principal. Seniors come in so many different shades. There are definitely 2 distinct attributes there:
  1. Do you understand complex system?
  2. Do you understand complex system and People?

  E6 = 2
  SDE III = 1 or 2
