10YOE in Python(Backend web)(currently in USA), thinking of moving to Data science for career progression.
Requesting Blind to suggest some online MS programme for 2021(January)
1. Ready to spend up to 20K USD
2. Haven't taken GRE/or prepared for it(best if no GRE requirement)
3. I have seen some focused programme where you can finish with in 1.5 Years, is it worth it?

A course with no GRE requirement rightly or wrongly will not be taken serious.

No. Try MS in statistics or CS instead if you must. This is the advice I got over and over from successful, highly paid data people when I was considering same. Most MSDS programs are a full on Trump university scams. I almost fell for it myself, but now I work at google and have a high salary without having done any master’s degree.

Scam? What? I did MS DS and studied optimization, statistics, probability, and ML. I work with people who have similar education. I haven't heard of any MS DS programs that don't focus on this, don't spread rumors

Well it sounds like you went to a good program. I applied to some that didn’t even require a GRE or any pre-reqs even though schools were well know. We’re using scam here as a way of saying “waste of money.”

    Not worth it

  • One option might be Harvard extension’s data science program. They offer a four course certificate within that price range. I’m currently taking it (not to break into a real data science/ML role, just to understand the fundamentals so that I can work with data science teams and run basic explanatory models myself). I have mixed feelings about the teaching quality, but the material seems relatively rigorous, and I’ve been getting what I want out of it at a fraction of the cost of a full masters. They do expect you to have a baseline knowledge both of coding and probability theory, and I’d recommend checking out the syllabus for the csci 109a course, as it’s the main course in the program if you’re interested in learning more. But take all of this with a grain of salt, as I’m probably much less technical than folks here, and I don’t work for a pure tech company.

👆🏼This is a good way to go. Not investing too much money, getting and understanding of it first. Also brings up an interesting flaw with all DS programs. If the professors had such a great understanding of ML and other DS concepts, why are the teaching and not doing for tons of dough at Google?

    • That’s an interesting point, and I certainly don’t have the perspective on the transferability of skills/culture between academia on tech to weigh in on that. I found that a lot of professors in my program had phd’s from top institutions, but either didn’t bring the materials to life, or didn’t use pedagogical principles to make lectures more coherent. Which seems like a wider issue across academia, but probably some programs are more teaching focused than others.
