Should I use a head hunter for dev roll?

May 5, 2021 16 Comments

Im looking to start applying and have gotten a ton of mail over the years from various head hunters peddling positions that I'd be interested in.

Should I use one? I hear they get commission based on my salary. Does this make my application generally less attractive to the companies?

Feel free to use them, but don't limit yourself to just one recruiter.

  • The bonus to using a headhunter, is since they’re commissioned based on your salary, they are incentivized to increase your salary as much as possible.

I used one and ended up backing out of the process, it was annoying to talk to the head hunter + the recruiters from the companies with whom I was interviewing. For me personally I thought not having the head hunter in the mix made my life easier

  • The commission is paid by the employer, no? If they have an offer you're interested in, why not look into it?

For contract roles they are almost the only way to get in at some companies, even on corp to corp. For full time roles they can be hit or miss. While they get a percentage of your salary, like with a realtor, they may not have as much incentive to get you that extra 20K or whatever you are asking for if it means losing the sale. If you have a good network, it is always better to get a referral from someone who is in the company. From the companies perspective it is 20% less expensive for them to hire you directly vs through a recruiter so a personal referral has a lot of advantages.

Also, while some are good, some are no better than used car salesman. One really bad one I would avoid is Mondo. They like to pressure to accept the job before you are ready to take it. I had one instance where I interviewed, had not received feedback from the client and they wanted me to commit to taking the job and called and emailed me four times a day for two days doing the same thing until I finally told them thanks, but no thanks. Even after that they still kept calling and e-mailing.

  • A lot of smaller companies use outside recruiting agency. No harm in using them. They are paid as a percentage of your salary.
