Hear a lot of not so great things about the culture at Amazon (competitive etc.). Personally love Nike and the wlb and collaborative community here.

Hypothetically, If you were offered a position with the same role and pay, would you switch to Amazon?

YMMV based on org/manager and team culture. But Scope of influence is insane at Amazon for a huge corporation. First year out of college I got to be primary owner for projects that people blogged about. If u can swing it, the opportunities are great, but it’s not for everyone

Portland is better than Seattle I agree with that. The crying thing is an exaggeration. If you're good you're happy and the company treats you well.

The people feeling gutted are the bottom performers. The bottom ten percent go on formal plans and the bottom third or so worry that they might be next. The top twenty percent are actively rewarded and the top half are feeling pretty good.

So your experience depends on whether you are in the top half of employees or the bottom third. It's definitely a competitive place but if you're actually pretty good at your job that's a good thing.

If you suspect you're going to be bottom third then do Amazon and yourself a favor and don't apply.

I don’t think this is quite true. Our culture is pretty bad and plenty of folks get managed out that could be thriving but don’t due to bad management or politics. There are some incredibly poor orgs, but even the best only seem to be mediocre. We don’t have culture, but we have RSUs so that’s a fair trade off I guess.

What are you comparing Amazon to, Google? The culture is way better than Apple or Facebook if you care about WLB, and WAY less aggressive than Netflix if you care about job security. Google has a great culture although it has problems too (crazy political impossible promos). But Google isn't exactly representing the industry, it's considered the top.

The culture at Amazon generally is massively superior to most of the rest of tech. It's not close. I've worked lots of places and I got sick of having to carry everyone else. If you're the guy being carried then go work for the rest but Amazon is a way better place to be than most if you get stuff done.

I've had Amazon recruiters reach out to me. I politely decline. Top performers may get treated well, but work/life balance is very important to me. Also, how they treat warehouse workers is very telling.

I work 60 hours a week & would be surprised if any of my peers work less than 50.

Amazon's hiring bar is not that high. It's only fake high. Lowest performers get pip. If you can make it past two years you're set.
