Job Safety is an illusion. You are always one bad manager and one calibration session away from getting a bad rating.
Having good finances and marketable skills is the only safety net.

I've seen three in my 6+ years. First was a relatively new hire that was slow, things were others fault, and wouldn't adapt ways to the team. Second was someone who stopped caring and effectively quit working. Third was because of an incompetent manager that couldn't help a good IC through a tough spot in life. IC was someone Amazon should have supported, but was driven to quit with an incompetent dev plan.

Can you explain why it's safe? The ad industry typically declines in a recession as well. Wouldn't it be safer to work for someplace like the US Government / a national lab, which is well-known for job security, as long as your job is not politically affiliated / tied to the current administration?

Zootopia had a segment on this, I think, where their DMV snails took forever to do anything. Good luck getting them to fire each other.

OP why does that make it safer? No one said anything about income, just job security

    • Salary in government was fine. I was 2 YOE making 120k at a National lab working on interesting stuff. The issue is absolutely no bonus benefits.

Now my TC doubled to 240k with one move to MSFT but base is only 155k much is in vesting stock and bonuses.
