Currently working as a L4 SDE at Amazon AWS. Not getting along with my current manager and he is being totally unfair and unreasonable. Not going into details as blind is full of such stories.

Have been interviewing past few weeks and got an offer from Palo Alto Networks for principal software engineer position (I know they have inflated titles). Saw few blind posts that cloud in PANW is far worse to work. Same is the work culture. At the same time, work culture at Amazon is not great too.

Should I choose PANW over Amazon?

Current TC ~200K
Offered TC ~300K

YOE 2.2/6

  • I may be biased and didnt work at 🍌 firm, but here are my comparison points that I used when chose PANW over 🍌 company:

    1. PAN dont have URA quota and pip stories.
    2. colleagues are very friendly and helpful, no backstabbing as there is no cutthroat culture and no upside when behaving like a jerk
    3. currently most people WFH, there is no push to return to office, management listens to engineers carefully and asks for feedback on most things
    4. Most important for me: top tier colleagues in cybersecurity, very deep expertise and constant innovations.
    5. Depends on the team ofc, but you wont be bored with regular CRUD stuff. There is very serious focus on security research, R&D, and innovations.
    6. TCwise - good RSU grant and refreshers and stock is πŸš€πŸš€πŸš€
    7. as for WLB - the stock is πŸš€πŸš€πŸš€ so there are expectations related to feature delivery, company wants to win new clients and new business, so your deliverables have direct impact on top line. Competition for customers in security is fierce both with established players and countless startups. Thats why everyone is motivated to do a good job and deliver features. management takes WLB seriously, vacation is unlimited.

if you like security as a domain and want to grow professionally in security, PAN is a very good choice, very few alternatives (almost none)
