Blind newbie here. I’ve got interviews with Google and Meta coming up for UX research roles. I’m transitioning from academia into industry and these are my first UXR interviews. Not trying to get laughed out of the (virtual) room.

Already spoken to internal recruiters so these are the 1-to-1 conversations with UXRs. Any advice on how or what to prepare?

TC: laughable academia garbage 🗑

Hi- it’s been a couple of years since I went through these interviews, but from what I remember at Facebook there is a specific prompt. I believe in mine they asked me what my favorite app was, and we used that to ground the example. Then they had some prompt like, “imagine the team has seen a drop off in engagement with the app, how would you help them move forward?” You get to ask questions and the idea is for them to understand your thinking around methodologies and how you would scope research. I think you come up with a research proposal and then they might ask things like, what would you do if you had less time/more time, etc.

For Google I don’t remember it feeling like a case study I think it was more scenario based. They sort of painted a picture of a situation and I was asked to recommend a research method(s). We did this for like 3 to 5 examples.

Apologies if this information is outdated; hope it helps!

There's a startup called Prepfully where you can do UXR mocks with ex-employees from these companies, they are a paid service but super helpful generally.

If you’re still prepping this article is more design centric but generally helpful reminder on prepping for these: https://dscout.com/people-nerds/whiteboard-challenge-ux-research-interview-tips

Update: I did a functional screen with Google last week and it was actually a single case this time. We started high level “the team wants to explore this new project area” and spent probably 40 min just getting increasingly more granular “now they have a prototype” and “now it’s two weeks before launch” etc.
