Google Contract Position vs Google FTE Interview complications

Hi All, I'm looking for advice as I'm super stressed. I have a background in program management and been on the job search since Jan/Feb time frame. I just recently finished interviewing for a project manager role that is on contract with google. I feel like I have been lowballed as I tried to negotiate the salary and was told the budget was firm and google would have to go back and get approvals in order to change the pay so that was not possible. I just verbally accepted the offer and just now received an interview invitation for an FTE program manager position at Google. I'm conflicted on how to proceed if I should accept the interview and rescind my acceptance to the contract position? Could this jeopardize my prospects at google if I accept the interview?

I'm conflicted because even though I have an invitation for an FTE interview with Google, there is no guarantee of receiving the role depending on if I pass the interviews.

Also, I verbally accepted the Google contract position yesterday but haven't filled out any paperwork.

Thoughts?

  • Why can’t you take the contact while interviewing for fte role as well? Happens all the time at Microsoft.

Google interviews are tricky too so don’t want you to end up losing on both sides!

      OP
I don't want to screw up both opportunities and end up with nothing and possibly risk future opportunities. I was thinking of doing that but I'm really stressing about it. I responded to the recruiter, I'm thinking of saying I just received an offer but would prefer the FTE role and see how the recruiter reacts.

FTE is better hands down any day. Prioritise that whichever way possible.

  • You should talk to FTE HR about this situation and say I would prefer FTE offer.

Thank you! would it raise a red flag though? I just accepted this contract offer yesterday verbally. Also, the FTE role is not an offer I still need to interview for it. Sigh......

OP I was in this exact same position, but with Meta. Had a contract offer on the table, but also was in the interview loop for the FT role—awaiting on-site.

I considered how transparent to be with my recruiter, ultimately told her just what I'm telling you, and she told me that accepting the contract role makes me ineligible to apply for a FT for, I think, 3 months. So at that point I turned down contract role. It sucks, because I wanted to do both—didn't want to end up with nothing—but if I hadn't turned down contract (assuming recruiter was being honest, which I assume they were), then I would have automatically disqualified myself from FT.

Not sure what the situation is with you—best of luck and congrats on both your contract offer and FT interview!
