Hello Blinders,

TC : 160k SGD
YOE : 6
Role: Senior software engineer

I'm in a dilemma of choosing Singapore vs Canada for longterm settlement. I'm originally from Sri Lanka and currently in Singapore doing a stable job with a startup backed by a billionaire. And I'm quiet happy with the work and been with the company for 3 years, however the downside is it's nearly impossible to get a PR here and have long term plans for the family, my work visa is tight to the company and I only have 1 month if for some reason I got fired/ laid off to stay and find a job.

I was passively looking out for a job in Canada and now got an offer from a startup(in Kelowna, BC) with a TC of 100k CAD which is less than 2/3 rd of my current salary. However this opportunity allows me to settle in Canada and get the PR. I'm married and wife doesn't work atm.

Appreciate blinders view on selecting one over the other. #canadapr #

  • Get Canada PR and go for 15 days to activate the PR. then after 3 years you will be eligible for Canadian citizenship. If PR is just the reason, you need not leave job at Singapore.

Cutoff mark for PR invitations has gone up and in my case even with maximum IELTS marks I need a job offer to make the cut.

After getting your PR if you don't stay for 3 years out of 5 years in Canada ,your PR gets revoked. You won't be eligible to apply for citizenship..
Canadian immigration is point based so more education you have, more relevant experience you have ,Canadian experience,English proficiency all things matter. Cut off is now almost 470+. So just getting high IELTS not gonna cut it anymore.

I would suggest consult professional. You would get all kind of advice like Microsoft on anonymous forum which are most of time based on speculation.

I did some research and in the long run SG could become a very expensive place to live, especially with a kid and his education expenses.

Once you move, you can get quite a few consulting gigs at $80-90 an hour. That would put you higher than your current payout just that you wont be an fte.
