  • The tone in this thread is that it's uncool to program in a Windows environment. Why is that?

PS: Most of my experience is on Linux. Even at work (believe it or not) my dev environment is on a Linux machine that I work on remotely from a Windows client.

People who think Windows is inferior probably don't have enough experience. Windows has evolved a lot and with the PowerShell you can pretty much do anything. Also the architectures evolved a lot, so it's perfectly fine to develop on Windows and deploy on a UNIX cluster. The times when you had to run your program on the same platform are gone. I've done a lot of programming on Solaris in the late 90s, when there was no alternative, and now I work 100% on Ubuntu. The only difference is that now I don't see any advantage of working on Ubuntu, and I was able to develop the same stuff on Windows at a previous company

      My target environments are linux.

And I've done the whole .Net thing for years. Grew up using a Commodore 64/128, and later Windows and Borland C++, .Net C# became my gateway drugs to modern programming languages... but I just really, really prefer using my own hacked-up vim concoction these days.

I do appreciate the direction Msft has taken in the past decade, but it's still just not my cup of tea.
