Compensation for NY

Friends I got an offer from a company in NYC, NY for a dev position. Would the following numbers allow me to live comfortably?

Base: $150K
Sign on: $15K

      When I moved to NY a year ago I was making ~100k base and survived off of that easily in my own 1BR in Manhattan while maxing out 401k and ESPP.

  • Don’t leave Microsoft for such a small bump. Which company and level? To answer your question, you can with a roommate, but you will start to feel quickly like you are underpaid.

    • Sure, but NY is expensive and has a state and local income tax whic Washington state/Seattle does not have. If the OP wants a newer building, it may be out of reach in NYC. Also, leaving Microsoft for just any company can be a risky career move. OP should make sure the technical prestige of the company is at least comparable for when they may decide to seek a new job.

    I just got a kickass apartment on UWS for 3300/mo. Top floor of a historic walk up building, with a staircase to the rooftop above me — all for myself. I didn’t have to spend this much, but it’s totally worth it!

    You could definitely afford a studio or 1 bedroom in a variety of neighborhoods in Manhattan but you will have more options in the outer boroughs
