Applying for internships as a freshman and one (Niantic) asks what my compensation expectations are? How should I answer this question? (low, high, etc)

thanks for any help

Always give a higher number. Start with $40-50/hr

While I care about how much I get paid, my first priority is actually securing the internship since this is pre interviews / offer. would a lower per hour give me a higher chance

Sure. But then be okay with as low as $20/hr (barely more than CA minimum wage)

Ask your school career counselors for numbers assuming they are decent counselors.

But for a data points as an eng intern (freshman to soph summer) in 2009 I believe I was making $20/hr. So, probs more than that.
