This is really saddening. We are capable of doing so much better as an industry. I believe that Google does have a D&I problem and has major bias in their recruiting practices. I believe most companies in our industry have the same problems, but Google is an industry leader and needs to do much better.

There is no system in place.
You are so clueless how good latins and black people have it relatively speaking. I'm not denying that they face racism and have many decades of oppression but reality is in present day there is nothing holding them back but themselves.
Instead of tweeting woke statements why not go get an engineering degree- oh I know, because it's TOO HARD. I know latinos and other ethnicities in the Bay, and damn, I can't believe how so many of them just don't prioritize education or academia. Many would rather spend money on getting hair extensions and their nails done. You cannot even BEGIN to imagine the kind of sacrifices immigrants make- my parents rarely ever bought new clothes, we never went to restaurants or even ate out at all, cooking from scratch daily, saving >50% of your income, and more. These come down to cultural values, not education. My Dad didn't even learn English until he was 22, and he's a millionaire now.
You cannot even imagine the amount of indignity Indian immigrants have to face being mocked for their accent, their religion, their food, their way of life, being confused for terrorists. So give me a f*cking break with how much blacks have had to face. We are all so sick of hearing about it.
You can’t pass judgement until you fully understand the psychological/social economic impact blacks and browns have endured here in the US. And because of this, there’s no need to continue this debate! PERIODT!
Timnit has been silenced. Real will shut up in the next few weeks. Hopefully twitch will fire you too OP.
However, I’ve realized that the greatest empowerment is the ability to leave. Most Japanese Americans repatriated back to Japan after they saw the writing on the wall in the US after ww2. Fewer Chinese are immigrating to the US as China’s economy booms. Heck, there was a recent thread of an AsAm recommending other AsAms to move to Asia. On the other hand, we have Indians who desperately want to come to the US and must face the realities of being f-Ed over by the mere whims of politicians (e.g s386). They must deal with the shitty circumstances of H1b bc they don’t want to stay in India.
The ability to say, “I don’t accept this situation” and leave is much more powerful than fighting from the inside. I understand that black ppl’s “motherland” is the US, but it can’t hurt to create more ties with Africans, as they will not be racist toward black people. It’s a difficult road, but I firmly believe that that is true empowerment.
