If salary is unknown people used “guessed” salary to do the same or company prestige, college prestige, level in company etc. that’s why hesitate sharing salary and now have started interacting with limited number people.

They are so competitve and anxious when it comes to money that they even choose their hobbies, likes, dislikes based on the money that will be spent.(inspite of earning 150k+)
At the time, I told the guy I worked with who was one level below me that I was open to telling him my salary in case that’s useful for promotion time. I left the company and got a message from him the next day on LinkedIn asking what my salary was. (Of course I told him.)
