Do they upsell or cross sell? It’s so hard to find what their day to day responsibilities are.

Asked to interview and recruiter was no help

EDIT: it’s the startup segment, most likely SA support and more, so what the hell is my job

They build a relationship with the customer and look for opportunities to grow their AWS footprint. There’s some tension between that and helping them reduce cost and optimize performance, especially with startups. But, their usage will grow as they do. I believe the startup AMs manage a lot of accounts, so your SA support is stretched thin and there are a lot of opportunities for you to be the primary technical advisor. Startup AMs tend to be very technical. You also bring in specialists or partners to support when appropriate. When your customers inevitably have issues, you’re the front line to help them solve them or schedule meetings to get them unstuck. AWS services pretty much sell themselves to solve their business challenges. Your job is just to figure out what they need.

I work with a ton of Account Managers since I’m a Sr Specialist SA on the AWS side. To be honest the only thing I have seen an AM at AWS do is setup phone calls for their customer with different SAs (Solutions Architect) or TAMs (Technical Account Managers). If you get on a big account like CapOne you make bank as an AM at AWS.

Edit: AM at AWS = AE

Haha sounds pretty easy. I have an interview for Tuesday. Do you know if they have any quota? I really enjoy interfacing with customers and helping them out, so sounds like a nice role

Yes, I know they carry a quota but not sure how it all works on that side.

And yes it’s a pretty sweet laid back job. I joke sometime that when I’m ready to retire I’m going to get an AM role, make nice commission, and run on cruise control. 😁

IDK but for some reason all the AMs I worked with are from South Africa

  • Did you got the job and could let me know how your day2day job looks like? Maybe also some insides on the quota and TC?
    Thanks!
