I would like to know what would be the usual salary these guys would offer.

Also, what is a good salary to start if I will be working in Tokyo at least I can negotiate a better offer.

Current status: 2nd interview done. If successful I will be relocating with my wife, we don't have kids yet.

I visited Japan a lot and love the country. It has super high cost of living and I don’t understand how can new grad salary be 1k usd a month? My hotel when I visit is $700 usd a night. My dinner is usually $250 usd a person per night. How do Japanese survive? Do people in their 30s get paid 20x more than someone in 20s?!?

Huh, 1k USD?? No way, normally 2k. And you know depending on how you use the money. Typically 2k / month is good enough for a single man to survive

Your intention of showing off is so obvious, no regular people in Japan stays in 700 USD hotel or spent 250 USD on a meal frequently

Age and YoE? This is Japan; these things are all-important.

For perspective, new grads make 300k JPY to start.

Rakuten is well known to be a terrible place to work.

They are also known for promising a salary (which is already low by international and Japanese standards) then lowering the pay after a few months.

The average tenure is around a year. In order to get the job you have to read the founder's book and write an essay on it. For all the complaints Amazon has, Rakuten makes them look like paradise.

Consider not being hired there as having dodged a bullet.

As a Rakutenian looking to get into Amazon, this is reassuring to hear. I had been fearing that even if Amazon accepted me, I might be in an even worse environment.

I want to get out of Rakuten so badly that is probably accept a salary even lower than Rakuten pays. Amazon is probably aware of Rakuten's pay scale, because the job I'm applying for had a salary in the description and it _just happened to be_ within 2000 yen per month of what I get now.

L6 at Amazon. Program Manager NonTech.

    13.7m JPY TC.
    YoE: 3.5
    Base: 10.8m JPY
    RSU: 2.9m JPY

Expect this to go up this week from annual review process.

When I was L5, my base was 6.6m JPY and same RSUs.

Amazon is better than Rakuten in Japan in term of payment.

Woooooow. You could swap the YoE and Base numbers there and it would be pretty accurate for Rakuten. And RSUs don't even come close.

(And how did you get to L6 in just three and a half years? When I applied to Amazon, with 21 YoE and a PhD, I was applying for L4.)

Thanks for providing real insights guys. I think I really dodged the bullet there. Can anyone refer me to Amazon Japan instead? =p

The only thing Rakuten is a winner from the UX job posts is they dont require you to know Japanese. I know a lot of people learned along the way.

In the case of Amazon in terms of UX job description, they mentioned you need to be fluent in Japanese. Is this mandatory? Then there will be less people with good talents applying.

_Some parts_ of Rakuten don't require Japanese. Others do, and expect you to be 100% linguistically and culturally fluent and behave just like a Japanese person would.
