I got an offer for an S/W Engineering Manager position, and I'm evaluating whether to accept it. I'm wondering about the EM roles & responsibilities and travel. #kpmg #tech #consulting

Why in gods name would an EM ever have to travel?

  • You want to come in at the Director level. That is one level above manager at KPMG. Unless you are interested in having sales responsibilities as well. Your YoE definitely qualifies for the Director level.

I was not selected for the Director role. Can you please comment on the job responsibilities for EM? e.g. coding vs architecting vs people management?

    • I can take my best guess but do you have a job description or did you try to ask these questions to the recruiter. I would assume you will have a couple of people that report to you internally and ultimately will be leading the client projects/teams that you have. Are you interested in sales/business development and have you done that before? That is where all the growth and upward mobility is in consulting but it would probably be best if someone from KPMG commented on this. I feel like you would have a way better experience in terms of growth, comp and wlb in the tech industry. If you are looking to be part delivery, part hands on development, part leadership, and part sales, this could be a good area for you. But again, in consulting it is about generating revenue from clients by expanding business and winning new deals. If that isn’t your interest then I would avoid it.
