I accidentally applied to an L3 SWE job posting at Google and was interviewed on the L3 rubric. I didn’t even realize until I asked the recruiter about leveling before on-site and he said L3. I didn’t feel great about my interview performance, but had really good conversations about technical stuff in most interviews. (only reached code for optimal solutions on 2 of 4 questions)
My recruiter came back and said I:
- Passed HC
- Was upleveled to L4 (no extra interviews or anything…)
Based on what I’ve heard here about Google, this is really weird.
For anyone at Google who might know:
- will I probably get a bottom-of-band L4 offer now? Maybe the uplevel will help in negotiation?
- will this make team matching easier or harder vs a normal L4?
YOE: ~3
