Getting a second job is harder than getting the first?

I’m an L5 with 2YOE. Looking to switch jobs but a bit frustrated at the lack of job postings for someone with my experience. Seems every company has a robust university hiring pipeline and then a million senior SWE roles. I’m also in NYC which seems to have slim pickings compared to other locations. For example check roles at Apple NYC… almost no roles for someone with my experience

Should I just shoot for roles that ask for more than 2 YOE?

I don’t even have open to work option on and I still get 2-3 startups reaching out weekly. Also have FB and Google reaching out but I know I won’t meet the hiring bar so no point in interviewing there.

They wouldn’t be reaching out if you weren’t qualified ;)

I think the hardest is reaching L6, based on watching friends/family go for it. But the 2nd job should be easy to get if you’ve gotten good projects and have practice talking about them and what impact you made. You should be applying to mid-levels at big companies and senior at smaller companies. People will disqualify you just based on YOE. You’re generally looking for IC3/E4/L4

  • If you’re L5 at Amazon definitely shoot for jobs asking more than 2 YOE. I was in a similar situation. I found the biggest problem was applications through job boards getting rejected due to YOE. Work with a recruiter or personal connections.
