I put skills on my resume I’ve never used

Nov 6, 2021 24 Comments

I’ve never built a microservice or rest API and I listed them as skills on my resume. Also never used golang and it’s on my resume. I’m applying for SDE I so I doubt they would ask me about them but it might help me get on a team that uses them.

If I only put skills I’ve used on my resume I would end up working on legacy code

  • It's gonna suck when you get asked about rest api

Maybe no one will directly ask what's microservices, but a discussion might come up around it in some design round, and to find out that you have no idea about what you've listed on you resume will look terrible.
Also, it's quite common of people to ask about rest APIs for SDE1 roles, I've been asked about 5-6 times

This is just not true. You are applying to SDE I roles the expectation is that you can learn and be an ass In a chair until SDE II. If you put a skill like rest APIs on your resume they might specifically ask you questions about it not even to find out if you know it but to give you questions in something they now can safely assume you will answer well. Even if you only know python and just graduated it's better to just put that and say what you are interested in working on in the interviews.

The worst thing you can do is lie. If the interviewer realizes this then it'll be an instant thumbs down in the round table...

Exactly, guaranteed rejection, learned this the hard way 😂

    • Don’t even get me started on how many employers lie to candidates in interviews and in job descriptions. At my current employer the job description said “mobile app development, rest APIs, and micro services.” And here I am working on a legacy monolith architecture

  • You have no idea how easy it is to find out fakers. Good luck. You know what they say though. Fake it till you make it. Just learn from all the rejections and eventually you'll actually learn rest APIs

    • Making one is not that important of a skill. Like you said its easy to make one. You don't even write a lot of code.
The real questions will be around how well you design them.

@Microsoft how should one learn how to design an API specifically? Isn’t it the same as general software design?
