Hi Blind Community,

I passed my phone interview @Meta and will have my virtual onsite interview in a few weeks for a CV/ML SWE position.

How is the weekly workload there, on avg? Or in other words: how is the WLB, is it more stressful or “good”?

TC: 92K (Germany, would correspond to 221K in Zurich due to COL factor)

92k Germany doesn't correspond to 221k chf lol, 140chf would be enough

According to levels.fyi, E5 in ZH is:

      235.200 $ BASE
      85.000 $ STOCK
      35.280 $ BONUS

Unfortunately, there is only one data point for ZH, but it’s given for an AR/VR position with 10 yoe, so that fits well.

Any metamates here who could tell us if this is realistic or complete BS?

    • 85k stock per year? That seems low comparing with Bay Area. I saw some folks posted 850k/4 from Bay Area.

Multiplying by "col factor" is dumb, after a certain point (mostly rent and food) expenses are the same regardless of where you live (travel, a lot of hobbies, cars, electronics). And of course savings, you can save a lot of money in high col place, and later on move to a low col place.

good points, but when I look at the numbeo entries, there is more than rent and food, e.g. preschool childcare: 2700€ instead of 400€. holy shit.

sure you can move later, but some probably want to stay in Zurich. Not the worst place to live and get older, IMHO. But thats highly subjective, of course.

Lots of hidden costs in Switzerland. It only makes sense if you live frugally. Otherwise Bay Area is better.

wow 5h/day. Guess it heavily depends on location and/or department.

no trolling. really want to understand what the workload could be when joining something like Meta. From my perspective, I can only judge from what I read here and there, and I see lots of discussions about WLB, being burnt out etc., which is disturbing.

Also interested if its worth the stress. Here, its quite “normal”, always around 40h avg, overtime is written down and has a total max of approx. 100h (worker unions and stuff). I have the general feeling that for FAANG it’s not like this, so the TC must be quite high otherwise people wouldn’t do it. Correct me if I’m wrong.

Does ML Swe require prior ML experience?

Well, one of the interviews is large scale CV/ML system design. So I guess experience in at least one of these areas can be beneficial. But the mandatory reqs depend on the specific job posting.
