Confirmed. It happened to me recently. Recruiter also hinted that they see offer letters all the time (a.k.a. don't try to become a Photoshop master overnight)

  • It is essentially candidates are supposed to stoop low and lie to other companies that they will accept their offer (because only then the offer letter is sent) and then use it only as leverage to have Google up their offer. It is ridiculous and downright evil. Oh the irony of what they stand for Corporate PR purpose "Don't be evil".

I am increasingly convinced it is totally pointless to interview with Google these days.

Are companies legally allowed to ask for offer letter of competitors or there are no such rules?

Yes they can legally ask. You don’t have to provide it.

No, the competing offer allowance doesn't have the same effect, because none of your offers have any knowledge of your past salary, and so all are divorced from that number.

It is at best, uncouth and unscrupulous; it’s illegal at worst. I also would think long and hard about a company that kicks off the relationship like this.

FB recruiter took the data points I gave her about my competing opportunities, and that was that. None of this “proving it” horeshit. Google is so lame and played out.
