Here are some sample calculations:
- Rent and utilities for a 2b2b: 3.5k (it's lower now but will be up post covid for sure)
- Car and insurance: 0.5k assuming you get a decent Japanese car
- living expenses: 2k assuming a relatively non fancy lifestyle (not sure, don't have kids)
That comes to a baseline of 6k/month or 72k a year. I would probably add another 8-10k annually as other expenses, paying for the flashy iPhone, discretionary crap and travel etc. So total expenses of 85k ish a year.
Your in hand pay will probably be around 98k (from the salary) + 10k (bonus) so that leaves you with around 25k USD of savings a year.
You can play around with the numbers a bit, example saving another 5-700 if you stay in a really cheap place or add another 300 a month if you want a better car etc.
Hope this helps.
Final parting wisdom, while 150k is certainly a decent salary in Sunnyvale, it's lower than the starting salary for new grads who share apartments and don't have any additional responsibilities. You have a triangle with the three vertices being a (1) decent lifestyle (2) savings and (3) distance from Sunnyvale. I would probably think of it in terms of that trade-off. If you are fine with compromising the other two and are Indian, Sunnyvale for sure is the most convenient place to live.
