I'm really sad hearing about the layoff announcement from Airbnb. My heart goes out to those unfortunate employees today and the CEO Brian. It must've been a very hard decision for him.

Airbnb was once rivaling Google FB and the like talent+comp+culture wise. It put the other "As" Apple and Amazon to shame in FAANGMULLA. Even among Chinese people the "A" in FLAG referred to Airbnb.

From a product perspective we all used it at least once. Let's be honest here. This was a game changer for those of us who loved to travel.

I don't think it's fair to hate on Airbnb ex/employees when they need support now more than ever. I can't imagine what the founding members must feel right now. This is definitely going down in the history books as the biggest IPO failure ever of all time. This is a sad time indeed for the tech industry...

EDIT: Not sure why there's still a lot of hate here. Of course I feel bad for people who were laid off in other companies as well. I specifically called out Airbnb because I noticed a lot of hate towards them. Also I love traveling and I used Airbnb a lot. I also own a single property and use Airbnb to rent it out. I love Airbnb and I'm genuinely upset they fell like this. Sorry for offending anyone. It's not my intent.

It maybe sad but not because Uber, lyft or airbnb engineers have lost jobs. Hard to feel bad for engineers making multiples of 100k for a product that also ruined a lot of housing communities for locals. Even harder to feel bad for airbnb management. They will be fine and their engineers can practically walk into another 100k plus job even in the depths of a recession. Can't believe this lack of perspective from some of the most privileged people in the world.

Imagine actually judging people for where they work. Amazon is fucked up for making warehouse workers pick up and deliver dildos in peak covid NYC. Fb is looking into everyone's data and plotting charts and what not. Google is spying. Fuck it, even my company is reducing jobs by automating the shit out things. We all are working for devils in some way or another. There is no moral high ground that any single one of us can even attempt to claim.
These guys who lost their jobs were making <0.01% than the company, senior board itself. Their lay offs don't change shit around society, you'll still see Uber and Airbnb around. Those execs will continue printing money while peasants will be happy celebrating fall of one another.

    • Let's not confuse empathy for moral relativism.

We should all encourage, not discourage, empathizing for anyone laid off, sick, having a hard time, etc. Doesn't matter if they're a janitor, a SWE or a CEO. Doesn't matter if they work for a company you consider "evil" (people throw that word around way too much) or a company that no one can say anything bad about.

There are morally superior companies and morally inferior ones, but that isn't a good reason to harass their employees for expressing empathy.

Well.. i do agree that this is fake empathy which is uncalled for to address to airbnb alone. I've known alot of friends and colleagues who are not in tech are affected by layoffs as well.. in this critical times. It can happen to anyone. Regardless of tech or non tech co. Everyone deserves the empathy from everyone. I've been in oracle before , fb , and now joining amz. I feel that its not so much about the company. But the people we met, i met lots of awesome folks which i stilll keep in touch. That's the real relationship we need to make, not towards the company.

It does exist, but not everywhere. What hurts me more is that for some reason I'm not full aware of, there is lack of solidarity in the tech business. I see more solidarity in other disciplines which everyone benefits from it. We are a community! companies that mistreats engineers should pay for it. Companies that treats their employees fairly should benefit from it.
