Separate interviews influence each other?

So my external recruiter pushed me to apply to Citadel NXT and Citadel Securities. I recently learned I have phone screens for both.

Unfortunately I don't think I have the technical chops to pass one of these interviews, as it is for a stack I am less familiar with.

Will poor performance in one these interviews influence if I move on in the other?

  • The two businesses are going to be interviewing for different roles and may have different requirements so just because you're not a fit for one doesn't mean the other one will pass. I've done plenty of interviews where my response is like "not a good fit for our group but this person should interview with X." The one exception is if you completely bomb the screen to the point that the interviewer says proceeding further would be a waste of the other interviewer's time.

    If you're concerned about the tech stack, I would try clarifying with the recruiter what skills the position is looking for. If the role is looking for someone with specific skills that you lack, it's probably a waste of your and the interviewer's time. However, many roles are just looking for a generalist. My interviews, for example, are almost always language agnostic.

    How do external recruiters work? Do they take a chunk of our salary or bonus?

    This would be a good question for the recruiter. My initial thought is that they would be completely separate.
