How far in advance of your move in date do you start looking for apartments in the Bay area?

  • I started looking a month before but it was really hard to do from another state. I moved here and had temp housing which bought me more time and being here made it easier to look but still took 1-2 months to find something (it’s really easy to get priced out by ridiculous offers even for rentals. I lost out on two apartments because someone was willing to pay a year’s worth of rent upfront). Give it a little time or be willing to pony up extra cash to expedite. Either way be ready to move immediately financially and paperwork-wise when you do find a place because there’s always a long line of qualified people who want any apartment.

    • I strategically looked at places near my company’s shuttle stops, which are all over the Bay, but in central areas in whatever cities they’re in so it’s hard to answer that question. Others may be able to give you additional insight but based on my experience I’d say you need a month or so if you’re looking in areas like the Peninsula near tech companies, the East Bay particularly Downtown Oakland, Emeryville and Berkeley and def all of San Francisco.
