And earning better pay based on purchasing power parity. The truth of the matter, which is very hard to admit is that people who are living in abroad telling us they are looking for better life were just not-good enough to compete in their home countries. There is just too many competition, and you have to be actually good enough to get a job and be very good enough to stay in one especially in countries like India where the ratio of young folks is substantially high.

lmao no, because there's no amount of purchasing parity in India that will get you out of the smog and shit in the streets. Unless they have nepotistic opportunities or are executives in big tech in india, most indian engineers worth their salt would have left. this is not to say all indian engineers outside of india are good though

  • LMAO you are delusional. The fact that you have to write this post shows you're an insecure person despite making a highly competitive salary. I would not live in India even if I was offered 240k to live there. You couldn't possibly understand unless you lived abroad. I hate this backward mentality and this is why I would never go back to live in that culture. If you were as good as you think you are, you wouldn't have time to write this post because you'd be too busy to be bothered by others life choices. Also if everyone in India is so good, why is it in such a mess and why do we not see nearly as many successful startups as in the states on a global scale?

    PS Indian here

@soundcloud you clearly have very strong feelings about this and understandably so. I'm going to try and give an unbiased picture of how India operates today. Most successful Indian start-ups of today haven't gone global yet because India itself is a very tricky market and it would be foolish ( I think for them to expand before solving the domestic challenges) but business aside, the tech work being done in these startups is at par with the best tech companies/startups in the US(maybe not at the level of Tesla).
Further, idk when you graduated out of India, but I'm a new grad, and the trend I have seen among the recent graduates is the ones who really outperform in college and are adept in coding stay back and work because the pay is honestly great. The ones who leave shore are the ones with a keen interest in research or the ones who didn't really manage to get a good job here.
As for living abroad and culture. The only negative I find in Bangalore is the pollution and traffic. The culture here is very open and is as cosmopolitan as it gets (I've lived abroad). I'm not sure about when you graduated out of here but it would be a good parameter to add to the discussion.

  • Some of the very best do transfer out, as and when they get the chance, but a lot of them stay back making above 50L at less than 3 yoe at companies like uber, tower research, rubrik etc. Also, alot of people joining amazon and google in the US are those who couldn't get into tier 1 colleges in India.

Every one knows google india bar is much higher from a competitive programming perspective. Also pollution and quality of life matters only to those who have lived in the us and thinking of coming back, otherwise 22 years in india and you have already adjusted.

    • Isnt 50L like 75k? That’s worse than a no name tech company salary for new grad here. I make ~300k with 0 YOE in the US, and there are people making more at finance places, so why is that a flex?

    • Google India bar is a nowhere close to what bay area demands. Competitive programming bar is new grad talk. Interviews are much more than that. Sheer scale of systems demands a different dimension of skills.

  • Why the debate. UNESCO has already declared that India has the best programmers

Best programmers wont necessarily build best companies. Best entrepreneurs do. This mindset of focusing on one particular competitive and comprable aspect and trying to ace the result is no good. I am from one of the so called reputed colleges in India and I loath how much they value these colleges. Its not that these colleges are bad. The mindset that not getting into these colleges or similarly not being a good programmer implies that someone is inferior is bad. There is so much more than programming to become a good software engineer

    OP
Kindly don't include engineers from WITCH companies. Most of the startups in states have engineers out of bootcamps at least ours are graduates.
