I believe that folks in tech industry think that they are too special and hence refuse to take collective action. We frequently refuse to unionise thinking that it will lead to not-so-good peopel getting higher TCs as if the rest of us are some kind of rain makers. None of us are the Rob Pike or Jeff Dean or Sanjay Ghemawat, we are a bunch of LC monkeys who solve build problems and read logs as a full time job. We refuse to discuss salaries and comp openly. Only blind community does this and we still need to resort to anonymity since this kind of thing is frowned upon ( thank you Blind). Even after Uber employees received ridiculous tax bills (governments fault too here), yet the lawsuit is not class action. We just refuse to take any collective action.

What unionize? Within Amazon itself AWS engineers treat Retail engineers lower class than themselves. There is class divide, tier divide, prestige divide and a constant rat race which has made engineering interviews one of the toughest and at the same time irrelevant to the actual job. And you are talking about unionizing.

    • People who attack others for where they work are the same. Tech workers are driven by elitism like this, which makes us enjoy divides. The sooner we realize that we aren’t superstars- that we’re just well-paid employees making money for the superrich- the better we’ll be equipped to advocate for ourselves. We have no power- just look at Tim Bray, who realized that even with all of the prestige of his position, without any collective action there was nothing he could do to enact change.

Within apple itself, an engineer in certain divisions are treated like second class by engineers in other high profile divisions, irrespective of individual merit. The classism in the company is very real and on your face.

  • You know companies really don’t have like infinite money to pay ppl right? Like uber being not profitable yet?Unionizing isn’t gonna get everybody half mil salaries if that’s what you’re looking for

I want to get promoted every 2 years, without putting effort. I think union will help me. I love unions so much that I want to move to Argentina, however, I am not able to get a tech job there, because there are none. What to do OP?

Op is a moron. Get a job at Boeing as a shitty mechanic. Stupid post. Only people that need unions these days are lazy ass idiots that want to be paid to sit around and complain about their job. Op is a perfect candidate.
