Update:
Uber offer: 198K, 710K at 35, 30, 20, 15% per year, 17.5% target bonus and 30K sign on for first 2 years each.

FB offer: 200K, 630K at 25% per year, 15% target bonus and 90K sign on.

Overall Uber offer is much higher.
_______________

Expecting L5A/L5 offers from both Uber and Facebook.

What place would be a better switch if the pay is same?

FB:
Pros -
FB has better name, lesser commute (15 mins)

Cons-
Known for poor WLB and hacky eng culture (?).

Uber:
Pros -
Team seems nice and their WLB should be better (an eng on the team said ~40 H/week).

Cons -
Lesser brand name than FB, slightly longer commute (25 mins) and less perks (?).

What would you recommend an please leave comments for the reason?

My main reason to leave is recent comp cliff and career growth (L4 at Google). But I am also worried about the high expectations culture at any new place, especially after reading all the stores about Amazon and some other places. 🥲

TC:280k. Expect it to be 325k+ next year.
YOE: 6.5

  • Uber is a rocky ship. They're compensating for it by paying a lot more money. If that's the case, join Uber and rake in some cash, the WLB and engineering strength are good positives. If it's the same comp, go to FB.

Google generally requires more than 2 years of tenured success/performance at the 6 level, so even if you got in at 5b, that's still difficult. In general Google is a hardass. If you want to shoot up the ranks, just stay away from Google.

If you really want to succeed, just go to Facebook off the bat. I think e6 promo is also hard but you have way more opportunities(as in team match will give way more options) and less likelihood that your project will fail given fb is just cash rich all around. Sure you can try for l5b promo but why not just do it internally. Of course unless you love your Uber team then grow there

I want to try Facebook, but their comp is lower than Uber and I think I will end up working more there due to poor WLB.

In the end, measuring the return to myself and feel like working more for less pay (but better perks) may not be the smart choice. Thoughts?

Your question is a bit inaccurate, “if the pay is same” is a big assumption and most likely false. As others pointed out Uber pays more to compensate the risk and maybe brand name. Your call to get >50k more at Uber with all the cons here

    Congrats on the offers

Eng culture and quality is much lower than I expected though some orgs are better than others. There are L6-L7s coming from Google and like trying to change things for better and while you could be one of those it still hasn’t happened.

It’s way easier to have impact since there are lots of problems with outages and room for improvement in product so opportunity for interesting work. Opportunity for promo is a big plus for Uber while I didn’t see a viable path to L6 anywhere else
Our stock was shit since last year so my rsu didn’t appreciate, but still my TC is higher than faang offers I had considering their appreciation. Just something to consider when comparing offers. Good luck choosing next gig
