Is U-district Seattle a bad place to live?

Hi,

I'm a 30 year old male moving to Seattle from NY for my new job.
I don't have a car, and don't plan to buy one for about a year.
The new job is in SLU, and I am moving with my wife who will be working at Bellevue.
I am looking at places to rent, and without a car, U-district looks like my best option since commute looks convenient for both of us using public transit.
However, I've heard that living at U-district is a bad idea due to safety reasons and students being noisy and drunk.
Is U-district an area I should avoid?
Also, is there anybody living in U-district and commuting to SLU? How's the commute like?
I don't know the Seattle area, please give any recommendations for location if there are better options!

    I would recommend Bellevue over Seattle. I also moved from nyc to Seattle. I lived in Seattle first but after 1.5 years moved to Bellevue—such a better City.

    U District has some cool restaurants and they open later than other parts of Seattle/Bellevue. Coming from nyc that was an adjustment. Restaurants close by 9:30 even on a Friday.

    In terms of safety, Bellevue will be safer but U District should be safe enough. You won’t have problems if you avoid some streets at night.

    Commute wise, U district to SLU is very doable. Imagine St. Marks to Wall St. that’s about the commute.

      SLU as Brooklyn and Bellevue as Upper East Side seems wrong to me

      SLU = Industrial wasteland not too far from downtown gentrified into corporate offices and new apartments. Sterile veneer over what was once a gritty part of town. Expensive. Not cool in any way. Seen as Amazon-land by anyone in Seattle.

      Bellevue = Rich people. Malls. Actually sterile. Has some density downtown but it’s all 6 lane high speed boulevards. All those sky scrapers have massive parking garages. Very auto oriented. The coolest restaurants and bars are outposts of ones in Seattle. Nothing original here.

    Lots of the city of Seattle is really really nice. U District is the ghetto of Seattle. Everyone who leaves there says their quality of life goes up substantially afterwards.

    Live literally anywhere else.

      eh yeah still most stuff above 50th is pretty nice though, close to i5 u see a bit more run down stuff
      but ghetto of seattle would be beacon hill/first hill/intl district plus being in downtown/belltown is way more dangerous

      I certainly expect to not have crackheads pounding on my door, and yet, that was the U District experience.

    commute will b 20-45 mins. theres plenty of quiet/safe parts a bit away from the ave
    i wouldnt want to live here at 30 though

    UDistrict is totally fine safety wise but is a college area so will be filled with college kids partying.

    I’d look for places around the Roosevelt Station on 65th. A few new apartment complexes have gone in there and there is a Whole Foods right there so you wouldn’t need a car for groceries. North Seattle in General is a really nice place to live and still be close to the city.
