Bad Amazon hiring manager interview

Apr 1, 2020 3 Comments

With enough time at hand due to #ShelterInPlace, I am looking around for new opportunities.
I scheduled interview with Facebook, Google, Uber, and Netflix. Mostly responding to recruiters reaching out.
Interviewing for Google, Facebook at L6 with the potential of L5 based on interview. Amazon's opening conversation was with hiring manager, who reached out on LinkedIn.
The manager was trying to convince me to join at L5(which translated to SDE 2) and mentioned that L6(SDE 3) in amazon in higher than L6 in Facebook/Google. Which I found out later that is not true.
Anyways, I decided not to interview with the team due to the very first red flag.
So, note to the hiring managers, please be honest. A bad experience may lead to a candidate not moving further.

Current TC: ~350 before the market crash. ~320 after.
YOE: 8 years.

Amazon really looks at scope of influence when leveling. They'll be looking for evidence of this when you tell your stories when asked questions around LP.

    L4: Be influenced by others
    L5: Influence your team
L6: Influence other teams in your org
L7: Influence other orgs under your VP
L8: Influence all orgs under a VP
L10: Influence all VPs under a SVP
L11: Influence Jeff and other SVPs
L12: Win an argument against Jeff, during a Jeff review, where Jeff insists he was right.

Amazon is really good at down levelling and making false promises to get the candidates interview and accept the offer. Don't trust the hr or hiring manager before accepting the offer.
